Jay Petervary won the 2007 Great Divide Race in record time. The route covers 2,490 miles—traversing Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico—and climbs over 200,000 feet along the way. Competitors must carry the equipment necessary to survive in the backcountry, restocking on food and other supplies from the small towns along the route (no prearranged outside support is allowed). Jay tells Dirt Rag what it takes to accomplish such an amazing feat—and still enjoy the experience.
